Articles of Confederation o Weak Central Government o Congress Ratify Treaties, Settle Disputes Among States, admit new states, budget money from state governments No Power to Regulate Interstate Commerce or Tax Citizens o Reflected Former Colonists’ Distrust of Centralized Government Power o A minority of states can hold up legislation, while it only takes 1 state to stop an amendment to the Articles of Confederation o Designed to not threaten the liberties of the newly defined states II. o Economic Depression: Foreigners flood the American Market with goods and make them cheaply available Trade Deficit with Britain Took the gold and silver coins are being removed from the American Economy > Commercial Banks lack the hard currency > Demand new loans o Political Crises Federal Government raised taxes on the states > The states raised
