Purpose To persuade my audience that rehabilitation programs for drug convictions are better at stopping reoccurring crimes than jail/prison time. Thesis Statement Rehabilitation allows for an individual to learn that they are better than the crimes they have committed in hope they chose a different route in the future. Audience Analysis Anyone who thinks that jail/prison is the solution to keep drugs and crimes out of neighborhoods. Persuasion Technique Evidentiary appeals because it is hard to debate fact over pure opinion. Introduction Did you know according to the Bureau of Statistics, that 3 in 4 former prisoners in 30 states are arrested again within 5 years of their release? Meaning that 75% of inmates that leave the prison system go back to their old ways and commit the same crime or even a worse crime than before. But what if I told you, that by simply educating and rehabilitating these inmates that we could potentially bring down crime rates? Attention-Getter Did you know according to the Bureau of Statistics, that 3 in 4 former prisoners in 30 states are arrested again within 5 years of their release? Establish Credibility Ethos: Working in the prevention field of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, I know the effects of drugs on an individual and how it’s much more than just using. I have witnessed my own father fall into addiction time and time again and having the prison system fail to have him recognize he is more than his using. Preview the Speech I am going to first start by stating the prisons statistics of reoccurring inmates, and why that matters to someone who isn’t in prison. As well as, bring up crime rate statistics of neighborhoods with previous convictions vs new crime rates. I will continue with how much this is costing an average tax payer and show how much they could be saving by advocating for rehab instead of jail/prison time. I
