Laura Miller November 2, 2007 Art History 202 The Musical Company : A Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Marc B. Rojtman Genre paintings, those that display people in their homes or gardens participating in activities of everyday life, were popular throughout the Netherlands during the seventeenth century. The main focus of such works of art was to capture the essence of an idealized family. Anthonie Palamedesz’ The Musical Company , a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Marc B. Rojtman, was completed around 1635 and is a prime example of a genre painting depicting a family and it’s values. Palamedesz’ painting illustrates how art was used to showcase and reinforce the ideals of proper families living proper domestic lives. The Musical Company , painted by Palamedesz in the seventeenth century, is a genre painting of the Rojtman family playing music together in their home. In the center of the painting are two men, one likely the father and one perhaps an uncle, playing the cello and the violin. Next to these gentlemen the mother of the family can be seen reading.
