181004*new room: Perloff 1102Parhae: An Era of Northern and Southern Kingdoms?-Known as the flourishing country of the East by the Chinese-Late 7th to early 10th century-Parhae/ Bohai- North, Silla- South-Parhae doesn’t really have solid, documented history-When Tang withdrew, they relocated at least 28,000 Koguryo households-Yingzhou (Chaoyang)-Khitan and Qidan -Tae Choyong (Dae Choyeong)-led out of Yingzhou back to old Koguryo territory-Tang tried to bring them back but they were pushed back and Choyoung proceeded-698 Tae Choyong established his kingdom in Tonmosan (Dunha), establishing Parhae-Begins to expand and for the next 100 years, Parhae expanded territory in all directions-976 Parhae was destroyed by the Khitan and Qidan (who established their own Kingdom, Yao)-Parhae’s foreign relations-Didn’t get well with Tang-Sanggyong, Parhae shows prosperity of the nation -Tang attempted to make an alliance with the Blackwater Malgal/ Mohe-Parhae decided to go to War, didn’t last long-Reestablished relations in the 8th century, got along-Bad relations with Blackwater, lots of fighting due to Parhae’s expansion into that region-Got better in later half, then worsened near the end of the8th century, resulting in Parhae losing territory to them-Close relations with Japan-34 occassions, Parhae sent diplomatic relations to Japan, and 13 occasions Japan to Parhae-Frequent visits-Exploring possible future alliance against Silla-Some moments of stress, ruler/King of Parhae thought he was anequivalent to Emperor of Japan-Treated very well by the Japanese
-Parhae v. Silla, didn’t like each other-Early year= litttle contact-Tension/ some armed conflicts when Parhae began to expand into Silla territory-Near end of 8th century, conflict fizzled out a bit-Lots of competition between the two-Economy-Some agriculture, mostly hunting, fishing, and gathering-Traded with its neighbors: Silla, China, etc.
