Liberal ideologies argue that we all have access to reason-Through reason we understand that our happiness depends on the full consumption of nature – we must work the land, cut down forest to harvest the wood – by fully consuming nature we are able to obtain property.Sixth Principle of Liberal Thought -In order for property rights to exist – there needs to be guarantees of security – property will have to be protected from people who are not following reason in society – there will need to be state intervention, and institution above individuals who are strong enough to enforce these laws.-The main function of the state in liberalism is the protection of private property – it will force the state to capture thieves, protect borders, protect the rich from the poor – the state existence is legitimized and limited by the need to protect private property.-The need to protect private property gives the state certain humanitarian functions through moral, health and educational responsibilities in order to prevent ignorance from prevailing as Liberal thought states that ignorance is a cause for taking unhappiness. -In a theoretical level, they will favor a minimal state – but in reality therole of the state will grow as societies become more complex – the history of liberalism will command the expansion of the state. oIn order to ensure economic development they’d have to introduce social programs / wealth distribution – the goal is to maintain and expand induvial spending power – these programs will also help to defuse the revolutionary tendencies that were found in Europe in the early twentieth century. Will allow for social mobility – allow for the creation of a truly inclusive middle class – the key to stable liberal processes. oBy elevating the standard of living of the working class, the modern liberal state is actually removing the causes of class antagonism -The state function within liberal societies therefore will have to broaden – and this broadening of the responsibilities will not overshadow the need to protect private property.
