Lexus Bacon GEO 221L 31 January 2018 GPS as a Political Power The GPS (Global Positioning System) has provided civilians, researchers, and militaries with incredible amounts of information on exact locational positioning and movement. However, Irving Lachow, author of The GPS Dilemma: Balancing Military Risks and Economic Benefits , explains that some theorize that the more civilians get access to this software the more susceptible they become to terrorist groups and attacks towards the US (Lachow, 126). The original purpose of the GPS was solely for military use, however, it has quickly altered since its origin. Now, different countries levy the GPS as a form of political power. For example, David Herszenhorn in his article "GPS Battle, Russia Sets Restrictions of Its Own" explains Russia adding restriction on particular system base station due to the US's refusal to allow other base stations "on American territory that would improve the accuracy of Russia's navigation system" (Herszenhorn).
