What lessons from the Great Schism can believers learn today about schisms and splits in churches and how to prevent them? According to Mark A. Noll, the events of 1054 between the Orthodox and the Roman Catholic churches were called the Great Schism. The Great Schism stemmed from Eastern-Western cultural disengagement, theological differences, and ecclesiastical suspicions dating back to the very earliest history of the church. 1 The claim of papal supremacy was a factor attributed to the Eastern resentment. A major point of contention was noted in the writing of the Eastern Archbishop of Nicomedia, who asserted that from his perspective, it was impractical for the Orthodox church to accept decrees from the Roman church when it had not been consulted. 2 The Roman church exalted itself on the premise of its pope being the heir apparent of the Apostle Peter, and became unwilling to listen, share, and interchange concepts with the Orthodox church.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
