Osariemen Emokpae Professor Williams EL 3500: Literature Across Culture 8 November 2017 Reading Response #6: “Blessing the Boats” is a novel that is composed of many short poems which focus on the works of African American poet Lucille Clifton. “final note to clark” is one of the poems that stuck out to the most for many reasons. The three poems read in this order “if i should,” “note, passed to superman,” and “further note to clark” all lead up to “final note to clark.” All four poems all letters which are sent to Clark Kent, who is Superman’s secret identity. In the first few stanzas of the poem, it is evident that Clifton seems to have a bone to pick with Clark Kent or animosity towards him which is seen in lines 1-3 “they had it wrong / the old comics / you are only clark kent.” Clifton only likes him for the image she saw, not who he truly was.
