Week 2 DQ 1 Questions: What are social determinants of health? How do social determinants of health contribute to the development of illness? What is a communicable disease chain? These conditions are shaped by the distribution of wealth, power and resources at global, national and local levels. Social determinants play a crucial role in the health of everyone. Good health involves reducing levels of educational failure, reducing insecurity and unemployment and improving housing standards. Societies that enable all citizens to play a full and useful role in the social, economic, and cultural life of their society will be healthier than those where people face insecurity, exclusion and deprivation. For example: low income families may not have enough money or obtain proper nutrition. The children suffer from hunger and cannot sleep because of the hunger. They end up tired at school, don’t perform well, fall behind, and don’t complete high school or go to college. They work minimum wage jobs and cannot provide for themselves or their family.
