Week 2 DQ 1 Questions: Explain the importance of random sampling. What problems/limitations could prevent a truly random sampling and how can they be prevented? Response: True random sampling is important for research because it’s unbiased. To obtain a true random sample, we need to identify our target population, have access to the entire population, randomly assign a number to each individual in that population and then randomly chose individuals until you have enough individuals in your sample population to represent the entire population. Each individual must have equal chance of being selected and used. This is not impossible, but not easily achieved. Problems such as cost, time, drop- outs, refusal to participate, and independent variables can prevent a truly random sampling. Many studies opt to use other random samplings, when a true random sample is not obtainable, to give the best results. A purposive sample may often time be used when a true random sample is unobtainable. Purposive sample is a type of nonprobability sample.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
