Cellular Regulation: Breast Cancers Pathophysiology: Breast Cancer o Description: Breast cancer is a malignancy of the breast. It is an unregulated growth of abnormal cells in the breast. Most breast CA is adenocarcinoma. Risk Factors o Female age 50+ o Over 30 with 1 st pregnancy o Nulliparity o 1 st degree relativ with breast CA o Genetic (BRAC1or 2) o Caucasian o Early menarche // Late menopause o Hormone replacement therapy o Obesity o High fat diet o Alcohol o Smoking Prevention o 2-5% of all breast cancers are related to gene mutation o BRCA1 or BRCA2 o Protective – increased physical activity reduced breast CA rates Frequency of Occurrence o Highest occurrence is in the upper outer quadrant and in the tail of Spence. Signs & Symptoms o Palpable lump o Nipple discharge o Edema o Skin retraction o Orange peel appearance of breast • Inverted or nipple changes o Prominent venous pattern Dimpling o Shallow dimple is a sign of skin retraction o Cancer causes fibrosis which contracts the ligaments Orange Peel (Edema) o Lymphatic obstruction produces edema o
