Cellular Regulation: Hematologic Cancers Leukemia Care of the patient with blood cell malignancies Description: Leukemia is a malignancy of the bone marrow cells that occurs when stem cells lose the ability to differentiate into white blood cells(WBCs), red blood cells(RBCs), and platelets. Instead, an abnormal white blood cell remains and normal cell line development declines. Normal Development of Bone Marrow Cells o Classifications: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) o S/S: Anemia, fatigue, dyspnea, frequent infections, flu-like symptoms, enlarged lymph nodes, bleeding, bruising, petechiae, bone & joint pain o Lab test: Platelet count, CBC, bone marrow biopsy, RBC o TX: Radiation therapy, chemotherapy, stem cell transplant (SCT) or bone marrow transplant (BMT) depending on type o Nurs DX: Infection, risk for Nutrition, less than body requirements Fatigue Nausea
