Pacemakers A pacemaker is an electrical device that provides electrical stimuli to the heart muscle when the “pacemaker” cannot. Used to maintain a normal sinus rhythm and adequate cardiac output.

Pacemakers Pulse generator contains the circuitry and batteries that generate the rate, (beats per minute) and the strength of electrical stimulus to be delivered to the heart.

Pacer Generators Permanent pacing generators are implanted in the chest under the skin and the wires leading to the heart are threaded through the subclavian vein.

Lead Wires This device is the lead which connects the pulse generator to the client’s heart. Threaded through a major vein into the heart. Receives hearts electrical responses.

Pacemaker Wire

Single chamber pacer and lead This pacemaker has one lead to carry signals to and from one chamber of the heart. The chamber may be the right atrium or right ventricle. Used for clients whose S-A node sends out signals too slowly but whose electrical pathway to the lower heart is in good condition.

Dual Chamber Pacer A dual chamber pacer usually has two leads, with the tip of one lead positioned in the right atrium and the tip of the other lead located in the right ventricle. Delivery of two impulses to either of both chambers can occur.

Pacemaker Terms Pacing “Spike” is a vertical line on the EGK strip that indicates the pacemaker has discharged an electrical impulse.
Image of page 14
Pacemaker Terms “Capture” indicates that the pacemaker has successfully depolarized the chamber(s). Atrial “capture” results in a P wave

Pacemaker Terms Ventricular “capture” results in a QRS complex.

Pacemaker Terms Failure to Capture Pacemaker fires an electrical impulse but the myocardium does not depolarize

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
