Kiana GreggClint HaleEnglish 2056 February 2019The Tragedy Wisdom BringsOedipus Rexis one of the most famous plays of all time. It follows the story of Oedipus, who had once saved his city from a sphinx and was rewarded with the throne. In Oedipus Rex, his town is struck with a terrible plague, and the king discovers that it is a curse that was caused because the murderer of the previous king was still alive and in the land. Oedipus vows to find the murderer and punish him, and upon investigating further, discovers that he is the murderer of the king, who happens to be his father, and whose wife he took as his bride. Oedipus, once he learned he murdered his father and had four children with his mother, is horrified. his mother/wife kills herself and Oedipus gouges out his eyes so he can no longer look at his errors. Now that he has seen the truth, he chose to be blind so he could lo longer look upon it. The oracle he consulted in the first place, Teiresias, summarized the play perfectly: “Alas, how terrible is wisdom when it brings no profit to the man that’s wise!” (346-347)Oedipus Rex
