TOPIC 6.- 6.1 Talking About Experiences Talking about experiences is an easy way to socialize in any language, and page 56 of your textbook provides you with some vocabulary banks to make it easier. Below you will find some examples of possible combinations that you could create. Note that you will see Past Simple and Present Perfect examples, which you will learn about in section 6.3. Examples For Talking About Experiences Read the following text about a vacation, identify which actions are still occurring and which are previous finished experiences. I have always loved to travel, and I especially prefer a relaxing stay at the beach. I have been to Puerto Vallarta and Cancun numerous times, but last year I went to Huatulco for the first time. It was one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen because the surrounding areas were more natural and rustic than in other major tourist destinations. We stayed in a small independent hotel instead of a large, all-inclusive resort. The fresh seafood was delicious and the ocean views were amazing. We met a lot of friendly people, we spent an afternoon at a coffee plantation, and we even saw sea turtles lay their eggs. I got to see a new side of Mexico on this trip. Oaxaca is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited and I can’t wait to go back! Have you traveled recently? Adjectives For Talking About Experiences Page 56 of your textbook also provides you with adjectives that you can use to describe your experiences. Many are common, but below you will find additional explanation for those that are more likely to be unfamiliar to you.

Examples For Adjectives For Talking About Experiences It was strange for me to see people drive on the left side of the road. Where I’m from, we drive on the right side. Our hotel was lousy . The beds were uncomfortable and the rooms were too small. I’ll never stay there again. The meeting was kind of stupid . We sat there for an hour and didn’t get anything done. The woman who sang the national anthem at the baseball game was absolutely brilliant ! I actually didn’t do much sight seeing in NYC because the weather was absolutely nasty ! It was too cold and rainy to walk around. The bathroom on the train was nasty, so I just waited until we arrived at the train station. The movie was so dull that I fell asleep before it ended. 6.2 Exaggeration and Understatement An hyperbole is an obvious and intentional exaggeration, it is commonly used in conversational English for emphasis and humor. Exaggeration magnifies the truth; on the contrary, understatement express the idea with a lower degree of importance. Sometimes people use exaggeration to tell stories and make them more interesting and exciting. Both exaggeration and understatement can be used for sarcasm and comedic purposes. Understatement is most frequently used to be modest and polite.
