Visual perception LOOK AT SLIDES Contextual effects on word recognition Doesn’t matter the order of everything just that the first and last letter be the same Contextual support Not entirely accurate, but nicely illustrates the powerful role of contextual support the jumbled email Word recognition In order to recognize words, we have detectors that recognize elemental figures One possibility for how the visual system recognizes words is through a system called a feature net The initial layer, at the bottom, comprises detectors for features Subsequent layers detect more complex patterns like letters, and then words Feature detector letter detector word detector Amazing how quickly we can do this Visual words can be recognized with extremely brief presentations (<40 ms) under the right conditions o Words that are more frequent in the language are better recognized frequency theory Their detectors may have stronger pathways and/or higher starting activation levels o Words that have been recently seen are better recognized, a phenomenon known as repetition priming Priming = facilitated processing (faster reaction time) following a prior encounter Recency improves your reaction o Words in general are better recognized compared to nonsensical strings of letters Word superiority effect
