Introduction Pneumonia is a common lung infection caused by inflamed air sacks. This infection can cause the sacs to fill with cellular debris, fluid, and pus. There are three things that can cause pneumonia; viruses, bacteria, and fungi. Bacterial pneumonia can either be in one small area of the lung or in the entire lung. Pneumonia can make it difficult for your body to get enough oxygen to your blood, which can cause cells to not work properly [Sul17]. The most common cause of bacterial pneumonia is a type of bacteria known as Streptococcus pneumoniae . Haemophilus influenzae, Chlamydia pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Legionella pneumophila are some other major bacteria that cause pneumonia [Sch18]. Pneumonias of these type are quite common and are often referred to community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). If someone spends significant time around or in hospitals or other health-care facilities, they can be exposed to other types of bacteria that are much more dangerous [Sch18]. Pneumonia from these types of bacteria are referred to as health-care-associated pneumonia (HAP). Sign/Symptoms Bacterial pneumonia can be mild or serious.
