Shaellen Thompson HCM 483 May 28, 2017 Case 45: Nurse Bullying: Unprofessional Conduct In this case a nurse named Raymond is always being placed in charge of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) because of his excellent job performance and customer service skills. He works in an inner-city hospital. There are only two male nurses in the ICU and Raymond is one of them. Raymond has a very confident demeanor. He can come across as a “know it all” because he boasts about his performance and master’s degree. The other nurse’s educational backgrounds are not as high as Raymond. Even though he has tried to become part of the nursing team the other nurses criticize him. The nursing staff talks behind Raymond’s back and challenges his authority in front of the physicians. He realized he was not part of the team and thought talking about his personal life would make the nurses like him more. He told them that his marriage was on rocky ground. This was because his wife was having health issues. The nurses pretended to care about Raymond but secretly wanted to see him fail and knock him off his high horse. They plotted to get his email and send him messages from a female named Terry. The nurses engaged in an online intimate relationship with Raymond disguised as Terry. Raymond told his nursing staff about his relationship and that he wanted to leave his wife for her. Eventually, he found out about the prank with Terry and that the entire staff of ICU was involved.

The organizational behavioral problem is workplace bullying. These nurses purposefully mistreated Raymond and wanted to do him harm. So, this would be considered bullying. “Seventy-three percent of all nurse’s report being the target of or at least witnessing bullying behavior in the workplace. Sixty percent of all new nurses quit their first job within the first six months due to the bullying behavior of their co-workers.” ("Common Weapons Nurse Bullies Use Against Their Targets"). In Raymond’s case I think the nurses were jealous of his accomplishments and that is why they chose to pick on him. Maybe they did not want him to be in charge of them because he was a man. You can be physically or verbally bullied in the workplace. Here are some of the examples of physical abuse would be shoving, kicking, hitting, punching and slapping. Examples of verbal abuse would be name-calling, belittling, demeaning, insulting and using words to get control over a person. When someone is being bullied their job performance is affected. They might have trouble making decisions, concentrating and have a decline in productivity. The work environment might become hostile due to the bullies. The person being bullied might also start missing work to avoid the bullies. If the person bullied uses his paid time off (PTO) then this becomes an additional cost for the hospital. In the case of Raymond and the entire staff of the ICU, he might try to sue the staff and hospital for the bullying he received from them.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
