Briana Bing Pre-Lab#7 October 29,2018 Objective: To synthesize Aspirin into its pure form Hypothesis: There should be approximately 4g of aspirin formed from the reactants in the experiment. The reactants are salicylic acid and acetic anhydride. The catalyst is phosphoric acid, that produces aspirin and acetic acid. Acetic anhydride is used in excess to completely react the limiting reagent, salicylic acid. Once aspirin is isolated from the reaction mixture recrystallization is used to purify crude aspirin by dissolving salicylic acid in cold water, since it is known that aspirin will not dissolve at cold temperatures. At this point, aspirin has been isolated by vacuum filtration and can be tested for purity. To do this we use product characterization, in this case melting point. An impure compound will melt over a wider range and at a lower temperature than of the pure compound. Once this is repeated and results are constant, the compound is pure.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
