Pavlov - Contiguity ● Contiguity if you take two stimuli or events and they occur close in time, classical conditioning will occur ● Pavlov- if you want classical conditioning to occur, the conditioned and unconditioned stimuli must be continuous ● Pavlov also believed that it didn’t matter what the conditioned stimulus was - if a CS is paired with a US, classical conditioning would take place ● Garcia - take an x-ray as a US, and this will lead to an unconditioned response (UR) of nausea ○ Take water/light/noise presented at the same time, and collectively these would be considered the compound conditioned stimulus and these will be paired with x-ray ○ We will then see if water light and noise will lead to a conditioned nausea response They found that water led to nausea but light and noise didn’t ● (US) shock -> fear (UR) ○ Water/light/noise + shock ○ Independently ○ Water did not lead to fear, but light and noise did lead to a conditioned fear response ● Early behaviorists overlooked two things: ○ 1) Biological constraints on behavior You have to take the species physical/biological makeup into account if you are to take classical conditioning into account ○ 2) Cognitive processes Early behaviorists didn’t think that animals like rats could think and figure things out

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
