DEVELOPING A CASE Psychosocial Development Case Study This assignment is based on the movie, The Butler, by Lee Daniels. This movie is based on a Black family, The Gaines, and their family and identity struggles during the Civil Rights era. In this paper, three of the main characters are analyzed based on their different stages of development and the psychosocial development crises they exhibit throughout. I chose Cecil, the father and main character of the movie, who goes through crisis in the middle childhood and adult stages of life; Louis, is eldest son, who is struggling with his identity in his late adolescent and early adulthood stage; and Gloria, the wife and mother who struggles in the early adulthood stage of life with family and self-issues. Cecil, the father in this movie finds employment as a butler in the White House after witnessing the death of his father before his very eyes by the white slaveowner in the cotton fields. He must learn to serve the very people who have taken away his parents and treat them with utmost respect, while serving his own family. His family, also dealing with the hardships of life, exhibit the models of wellness and resiliency as they endure these hardships throughout the movie. Cecil – Middle Adulthood Cecil, the main character and father and husband, learns to become a servant after witnessing the death of his father. After leaving Macon, GA, where he grew up, he goes out on his own to discover a better life. On this journey, however he learns that some of the same struggles he endured on the plantation, exists everywhere. Cecil begins to understand that he must learn as much as he can about the world around him. He develops a friendship with a master servant, who becomes a father figure to him. This master servant fulfills a void Cecil has missed by losing his father at an early age, by teaching him more life skills and by teaching him to become a better servant. Cecil goes through the intimacy stage of relationship, as he learns to 2

(Newman, 2018) Each person perceives enhancement of well-being through affectionate or intellectually stimulating interactions with the other (Erikson, 1963, 1980). The teachings of the master servant lead Cecil to a job as a butler in the White House. Cecil also marries Gloria and has two sons to care for. Cecil works as a butler for eight different presidents and learns to serve them with respect and honor while hiding his true feelings. He must learn to balance his job as the butler, serving the needs of the President, with the demands of his personal life with his wife and two sons and the growing civil rights issues.
