Lecture 6 - October 10, 2017 – Street Drugs Street drugs go back a very long time — taking drugs for pleasure, rather than for their medicinal qualities There are people who believe that even Shakespeare wrote under the influence of cocaine (pipes that Shakespeare used were analyzed and residues of cocaine were found) There are tons of abusable substances (e.g. decomposed cow shit releases methane which can give a high - people put plastic bag over their head with the shit and often suffocated while trying to get high) Elvis died of drug overdose and they couldn’t determine which drug killed him because they found so many drugs in his blood and urine. John Lennon was outspoken about his drug use. Substances that get abused: o Cannabinoids: marijuana, hashish o CNS stimulants: cocaine, amphetamines o CNS depressants: barbiturates, valium o Hallucinogens: LSD, PCP, PSILOCYBIN o Opioids: heroin, morphine o Anticholinergics: belladonna, jimson weed o Volatiles: solvents o Designer drugs: fentanyl analogues This is data from high school students in the USA Marijuana Marijuana is a preparation from the cannabis plant. Marijuana is the dried leaves stem and seeds of the plant all together. The ingredient that is most talked about is THC — Tetrahydrocannabinol (known psychoactive agent). Like any other plant, it is a complex mix of compounds. There are ~65 cannabinoids and ~483 other proteins, fats, carbohydrates in the plant which are not as highly studied as THC i.e. very complex. Cannabis is not the same as hemp. They are the same botanical family but hemp has less than 0.3% THC (while marijuana has 2-20%) due to cross breeding over the years so you will not get high. Sometimes people attempt to steal hemp plants from hemp farms. Hemp is very useful — can be made into fibres, plants, has food applications, oil applications. Can be made into canvas. Levi’s jeans initially were made from hemp. Rope is made from hemp. Also sold are hemp seeds, which are edible and high in fibre Marijuana is an easy plant to grow, it grows well outdoors. It is grown in high quantities in Quebec (leading cash crop) (planted in between corn plants because they grow tall and hide

it) There are several different types of marijuana plants. The ones grown for medicine or pleasure are: o Cannabis sativa o Cannabis indica o Cannabis ruderalis When they are grown commercially it is under controlled conditions. With proper care, the plant can be very tall. Once grown, you can dry it, chop it up, roll it and smoke it. The plant secretes a resin (drops of oil), which, when scraped off, compressed and the moisture evaporates you get hashish. i.e. hash is a concentrated marijuana. Hash history o Goes back to ancient China and Emperor Shen Nung. Ancient Chinese used seeds of marijuana plant as currency.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
