It is the actual statement that expresses the main idea of the essay. a. In Denise Coday's essay on, "The Practices of Dr. Rank," the thesis is, "Dr. Rank's function in the play is to foreshadow, symbolize, and reflect upon the truth of life, society and the breakdown of the barrier between appearance and reality." b. The thesis is " Dr. Rank's function in the play is to foreshadow, symbolize, and reflect upon the truth of life and society and to break down the barrier between appearance and reality." The writer's analysis is when the writer stated the importance of his character's role when he stated, "the roles that Ibsen gives Dr. Rank are crucial in the reader's understanding of the plot." The theme of the essay is Dr. Rank's purpose. The thesis, analysis, and theme relate to each other as all of them define Dr. Rank's role in the play.
