Sami Waterhouse 29647822 One important main point the authors discuss in the reading is that before welfare “died” in 1996, it was more expensive to go to work than stay on the welfare rolls. “… when a mother secured a job, she would lose about a dollar in welfare benefits for every dollar she earned” (page 97). This finding is important to family life because it caused families, especially single mothers, to have to subsidize their income in other ways, while still staying in welfare. These mothers could do hair, babysit, clean homes, or even selling drugs or their bodies to keep from obtaining a “real job” that the welfare system could use against them. These mothers could also use fake identities to obtain jobs, or jump from job to job before the welfare system could find out about it. This kind of instability can affect families, notably younger children who are growing up with parents who have to utilize this kind of “trickery” by letting them see that fooling the system, even though it was to help their families, is a good thing.
