Explain the difference between reader response and authorial intent . Reader response is when the meaning is determined by the reader or community of readers and authorial intent is when the author controls the meaning of the text. (p193) Why is the issue of communication important to the discussion of authorial intent? Communication is important because the meaning is found by questioning what the author intended to communicate between the author and the reader. The author leaves signs to convey his meaning. These include conventions of grammar, syntax, word meanings (p195). The reader is obligated to search for the intended purpose. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
