IC230 Jan. 28, 2019 “The Overcoat” In the short story “The Overcoat,” the first primary character which is mentioned is Akaky Akakievich, who is a titular councilor and is a copying clerk in an unnamed department. He begins to haunt a young clerk and steals coats on the streets of St. Petersburg. Akaky then replaces his overcoat, which is the happiest day of his life, but then sadly the overcoat is stolen and Akaky dies. The “important person,” is an unnamed person throughout this short story who was promoted to the rank of general. This is who Akaky goes to when his overcoat is stolen and is intimidated and scared of this important person, but in the end Akaky steals the important persons overcoat. Petrovich is Akakys tailor who once was a squire’s serf who went by the name of Grigory. He is the one who tells Akaky that his overcoat is impossible to mend that he needs a new overcoat.
