ADDRESSING THE CURRENT PERIOPERATIVE NURSING 2 The nursing profession has faced a number of challenges over the years that have had both positive and negative effects on nursing practice. Currently, nurses are facing a new set of challenges within their practice such as: rapid technological advances and medical knowledge, aging population with both acute and chronic illnesses, workforce population entering retirement, fragmented and limited nursing education programs, and nursing shortages It is estimated that the nurse shortage will worsen, according to U.S. Bureau Labor and Statistics (2015) healthcare occupations will have the fastest growth in employment between 2014 and 2024, which will create the need for an estimated 1 million job openings. This is a major concern that has sparked conversation about current education entryway, retention, pay, and burnout prevention. Significant to the nursing shortage, is the shortage of nursing in specialty areas such as the operating room (also known as perioperative nursing).
