Historical Background of Ephesians Ephesus was the capital of the Roman province of Asia. Today, it is a part of Turkey. It is located at the intersection of several trade routes and a vital commercial center of the Roman Empire. It was the site of a famous temple for the fertility goddess Diana that was one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world.(Holman Reference, 2016) The author of the Book of Ephesus was the Apostle Paul, while in official custody. Prior to writing his Epistle to the Ephesians in 60–61 AD, Paul had an established ministry in Ephesus. Paul first comes to Ephesus when leaving Corinth to travel to Jerusalem in 53 AD. As noted in Acts 18:18–22, Paul stopped off in Ephesus, visited the synagogue in the city, and missionary journey, Paul travels to Ephesus and establishes there his longest ministry in any one location. (Soper, 2015) It was during this stay that a serious crisis arose in Ephesus, as a direct result of the preaching of the gospel. The gospel had not only caused many to turn from
