Vida Andoun BISC 300, Microbiology November 27, 2018 Winogradsky Column 1) What microorganisms are apparent at the top of your column? Aerobic, photosynthetic bacteria 2) Where did hydrogen sulfide appear in your column? How would you enrich for those organisms involved in its production? Hydrogen sulfide will be mostly at the bottom of the column than top, because most anaerobic bacteria that uses sulfur as terminal electron acceptor than O 2 , so there is more H 2 S at the bottom of the column. These bacteria will use fermented final products like alcohols, organic acids as the carbon source, and production of ferrous sulfate, and hydrogen sulfide as by products. Fermentation is anaerobic respiration so, mostly these end products will be found at the bottom of column where oxygen concentration is minimum. 3) For a Winogradsky column, describe how the evolution of colors in the column (from its initial appearance through the changes) correlates with chemical and environmental changes of the column? Winogradsky column contains microbial ecosystem and illustrated the diversity of microorganisms found on earth today in footing of the variety of niche they occupy

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
