Eulalia Da Rosa COH 606  February 7, 2018 Week One Discussion Two  As a young woman I found that cervical cancer would be an interesting disease to research. There are approximately 500,000 cases of cervical cancer each year. In the U.S. alone, routine screening has decreased the incidence of cervical approximately 12,900 cases (“Cervical Cancer Overview, Incidence, & Prevalence,” n.d.). The two tests used to detect cervical cancer are the pap smear and HPV test. The pap smear is used to detect abnormal cervical cells, while HPV testing is used to look for the presence of high-risk HPV types in cervical cells. Women are recommended to be screened in intervals up to five years. The five years still allows abnormalities to be detected in time to treat them while reducing the detection of HPV infections (“Pap and HPV Testing,” 2014). TP/TP + FN = Sensitivity TN/TN + FP = Specificity NUMBER OF WOMEN TESTED: 10,154 PAP SMEAR: SN = 55.4% RULE OUT SP = 96.8% RULE IN HPV TEST: SN = 94.6% RULE OUT SP = 94.1% RULE IN Based on the data from above, the pap smear SN is low at 55.4%.
