Assignment #1: Write a short paragraph on why I chose this course and what I expect to learn. - Physical Anthropology=Biological Anthropology - Anthropology = the study of humans, divided in 4 - Archaeology, Biological anthropology - Biological anthropology is the study of the physiological composition of human ancestors - Prior to the age of enlightenment (early 1600’s to late 1800’s) - Considered heretical to question the teachings of religions - Irish Archbishop James Usher came up with the idea of - Fixity of species was believed to be truth - Geography discovered stratigraphy (layers of minerals and sediment in the ground in order to date items found in the ground) - Feldhofer Cave, Germany, 1865 where the first Neanderthal remains - Johann Fuhlrott & Herman Shaaffhausen theorized - Rudolf Virchow denied the existence of other hominids, believed the Neanderthal was a sick human - Geological formation happens over millions of years - James Hutton believed earth was shaped slowly and created the “law of uniformitarianism” (the earth was shaped the same way it is shaped today) - Charles Lyell – earth is 300m years old
