Downing 1 Layne Downing Professor Bauman International MGMT 8 February 2018 Nike: Advertising or Free Speech? Nike is a world-wide known company that operates out of Oregon. Nike is an MNC, located in different countries, that has captured a huge portion of the sporting market. They produce a wide range of products from apparel to gear and equipment. Nike has established itself as a “powerhouse” in the sporting world. It caters to everyone and has many professional athletes under contract. This company has a tremendously large following of people from all over the world. Nike experienced issues when abusive labor conditions were brought up against them. It caught wind that they had “sweatshop” factories overseas that had multiple issues with it. This was taken to court after the company knowingly made false and misleading statements in its direct participation in abusive labor conditions abroad. Nike found themselves in a lawsuit being sued by a California resident. Nike’s strengths that they can use to help resolve this issue is the magnitude of their brand name and slogan. The brand name stands out anywhere, and their slogan, “Just Do It” is inspiring to customers. Their reach throughout the world is far more than the majority of companies. When this lawsuit was going on, they were still experiencing increased profits, but just not on such a large scale as before. With Nike large profits on a huge selection of products

Downing 1 and being known world-wide, it is shown that they have the customer base that is dependent on the products that it will be hard to diminish such numbers. They have the profits to put money into adhering to laws overseas where their factories are located.
