ETHICS IN CORRECTIONAL COUNSELING 2 Role of a correctional Councilor Correctional councilors play different roles depending on the situation they are working in. A correctional councilor works with clients in the correctional system identify their strengths and weaknesses, address goals the clients have to be successful in the future, and help the client find services and recourses. A correctional officer also “Correctional counseling is a concept that describes the process of trained counselors helping offenders identify and incorporate better behavioral, psychological, and emotional responses to life events that serve to improve their quality of life and reduce or eliminate their involvement in criminal activity. “ (Hanser, More, & Braddock, 2011, ) Goals of a correctional officer The primary goal of the correctional councilor is to work with clients giving them skills to problem solve issues they are experiencing and guiding them throughout the process.
