LEARNING ACTIVITY WORKSHEET - Week One 1. Growing up with Death in the U.S. A. Why did death “come out of the closet” in the 1970s? What events related to the “thanatology movement” helped change Americans’ awareness of dying and death? - Death comes out of the closet in the ’70s because people are not that open when discussing such things. Even though people are using death as a joke, their ability to discuss it fully are still limited. This is the same as the topic of sex, the topic of sex has come out of the closet by the ‘60s even before death was accepted as a topic of discussion (Leming & Dickinson, 2018). B. American avoidance of death and dying and viewed as fearful - Samuel (2013), mentioned that death and sex are the most unmentionable topic in America, however, death is more unmentionable than sex due to the idea of death could also cause a prolonged carrying of heavy emotional, ethical, physical, and financial price (Samuel, 2013). This kind of topic is sometimes labeled as morbid in which why Americans and also other people try to stave it off along with death itself (Hannig, 2017).

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
