Terry – Operant conditioning. This about everything besides positive reinforcement Extinction paradigm under large conceptual framework called no reward. Individuals had been experiencing a reward and no longer so should see extinction occur. Refers to penalty as non-reward as well. Remove a reward from them. Time out – taking away an activity. Response cost – take away some material thing. Omission. Same concept. Extinction – if you train an animal so they know some behaviors, once they reach asymptotic performance, can institute extinction. Says we’ll allow response to occur but don’t follow with reinforcement. Initially when you stop, see an initial bump of more behavior. Extinction burst. Particularly a problem for reinforcing aggressive behavior. Might think your procedure isn’t working. If you wait it out it will become less frequent. Extinction doesn’t have smooth decrease in behavior. Done over several days. So getting to certain level, when you get back the second day, the behavior is up higher than where you left it off. Refer to as spontaneous recovery. See a little bump up at the beginning at each day. Continue this procedure, will get less and less spontaneous recovery until behavior is gone. Extinction burst associate with frustration that the person got used to getting rewarded and emotional about not getting reinforcement anymore. Negative emotions you have. Spontaneous recovery not associated with emotions. But you’re actively suppressing making your responses. Act of suppression becomes a little less day to day. Forget the suppression the next day. Forgetting factor associated with spontaneous recovery. When we get to final extinguished behavior, doesn’t mean you don’t know how to do it anymore. Extinction does not remove the learned behavior, just suppresses it. If you re-institute the acquisition, instead of starting from scratch, see immediate jump up of behavior. That’s savings. If the memory is still there, just re-activating it. In a way is discrimination training. Learn if the current rules say if going to get rewarded or not. Advantage of doing extinction protocol. Response Induction. Individual doing many different behaviors, take the most frequent behavior, R5. If I stop rewarding this behavior, and everything else is continued to be rewarded, as a consequence, see response induction. Some other new behaviors will take the place of that. Some will be similar, some will be new behaviors. Can get some new behaviors occurring. Textbook calls behavioral variability. This is kind of what happens with CRF, continuous reinforcement. Each time do behavior, get reward. Alternative to do is use schedule of reinforcement where they’re required to do more
