Climate Study Guide Climate Information about the weather for many years. It is a pattern of weather for a location over a long period of time. Several factors affect climate such as: oceans and bodies of water, the amount of sunlight an area gets, and mountains. As you travel higher up a mountain, the climate gets colder A climate in the north pole differs from a climate near the Equator because the North Pole has a colder climate whereas the Equator has a warm climate. Mississippi’s climate is warmer than that of Maine because Mississippi is at a lower latitude which makes its climate warmer than Maine. Places that have similar climates have similar types of vegetation and animals. Climate Zones Polar climate: very cold temperatures year round. Located around the North and South pole. Temperate climate: warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters. Tropical climate: hot and rainy most or all of the year The United States is in a temperate climate zone.
