The whole letter is written to these clergymen who criticized King for taking action. Paragraph 1 In the first paragraph, MLK addresses the clergyman's words concerning the timing of the movement being "unwise and untimely", stating Patient This paragraph establishes King's purpose for writing the letter: he wishes to address the criticisms of his fellow clergymen Just like many people before him, people have written to the church for help in terrible and unjust times.

that he didn't have to take the time to answer the clergyman's questions, but because he respects them, he will answer their letter. -In doing this, MLK gives respect to the clergymen that he wouldn't give to the average person. Acknowledging their position in the issue and in the community. Paragraph 2 The steps that King and others have taken to try to end discrimination and the reason for choosing Birmingham as the site for their protest Factual They choose Birmingham because of it being one of the most “racist” towns at the time so that way they could hopefully shed some light and justice into their hearts and have their voices heard. To have a successful protest, you need to have it in the right place at the right time otherwise it’s not going to work out. MLK was very clever to choose the time and a place in which the protest began. Paragraph 3 This paragraph is a response to one of the criticisms. It depicts the many instances of inequality that individuals in the African-American community experience. Passionate He shows how foolish it is for the clergymen to say “wait” for change. He shows that change must happen soon. MLK refers to the prophets during the eighth century B.C and how they left their villages and carried the message of Jesus far away from their homes, and believed that he too, needed to share

the message of freedom beyond his hometown. This allusion helps support his idea of trying to spread equality by using the example of the prophets sharing the gospel, and making a religious reference, as he is writing to
