2 Benefits of Outsourcing Services Introduction There has been a growing trend of late for businesses to outsource work that was once performed on site and by employees of the same organization. One such measure that has taken a giant step forward since the passage of the 2009 United States Stimulus Act is the outsourcing of electronic health records (EHRs) to an outside entity who maintains, updates and secures the data that is kept in a patient’s electronic health record. The passage of the bill has forced even those physicians who were reluctant to take on the task of transitioning to electronic health records from the old paper records to begin making the transition. Paper records have been in use for decades and as such this major change has not been without some resistance. Outsourcing EHRs and the Impact on Organizational Structure For many individuals in the health information management field, the migration of physical health records to electronic health records has forced a lot of changes in a relatively short period of time. Many IT departments are simply not equipped and emotion might be clouding the judgment of leadership because of fear of security and cutting jobs.
