Many minority groups in prior to the 20 th century w as were not granted the opportunity to learn these essential skills and those who did had to do so under strenuous circumstances. This paper is going to summarize, analyze , and synthesis three articles : ; Sherman Alexie’s “Superman and Me , , Frederick Douglas s ’ “Learning to Read and Write , ” and David Sedaris’ “Me t T alk Pretty One Day . . The articles offer insight on the struggles that people go through just to learn how to read and write. Sherman Alexie – The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me” Summary “Superman and Me” is a The short story depicts about the life of the author Sherman Alexi e a and his journey to becoming a writer. As a young N n ative America n living in the Spokane Indian Reservation in Wellpinit, Washington , he was not afforded a bright future. He com e came from a poor family background that lived on irregular paychecks, government surplus food, hope , and fear (Alexie 16). Indians were never expected to know how to read or write , and those who did were widely feared and ridiculed by both Indians and non-Indians. Many of the Indian children liv e d up fulfilled to this expectation , but Alexia refused to fail. At just the age of three , he knew that he was different, that he was destined for something greater. He taught himself to read with a Superman comic and after then this he read anything he could find. Knowing that books were going to be his salvation , he read at all time, during lunch, at recess, late in to the night and any other free time he could get (Alexie 18). And Moreover, although he wanted to be a pediatrician , he ended up became being a writer and now visits schools to teach Indian kids creative writing with the hope that reading will also save their lives.
