History 101 Midterm Review Sheet Short Identifications (40 pts) : In four to five sentences, identify the name or term (who, what, when, where), and most importantly, explain the significance of the concept or person to the course. On the exam, you will have eight identifications to choose among, and must answer four . Each identification is worth ten points.- Aggressive Neutrality- - Black Codes - Southern states passed these to control the freed slaves. They were oppressive laws aimed at keeping the Black population in submission and to regulate their affairs. Blacks were forbidden to serve on a jury, vote, or rent or lease land. The harshness of the laws varied from state to state. They had to sign annual labor contracts and were severely punished if they were violated. The significance of this is that it was an intent and effect to restrict african americans freedom and compelling them to work in a labor economy based on low wages or debt. This demonstrates how african americans were treated and oppressed throughout history. Columbian Exchange - In the sixteenth century from the Western Hemisphere to other continents, and from those other continents to the Western Hemisphere the Spanish changed the ecology of Europe, Africa, and Asia transfer of agricultural products (e.g., maize, potatoes, sweet potatoes, manioc, and tomatoes) and other exports (such as gold and silver) and diseases (such as syphilis) from America. In exchange, Spain received valuable Chinese silks, spices, and ceramics. The introduction of new plants, animals, and technologies altered the natural environment of North America and affected interactions among various groups in the colonial period.The Columbian Exchange affected interactions between Europeans and Natives. Myriad diseases nearly wiped out the native populations of North America. Significance: New crops significantly increased agricultural yields and population growth in other continents. Diseases ravaged native populations. American wealth that flowed around the globe between 1540 and 1640 made Spain the richest and most powerful nation in Europe. Emancipation Proclamation (1863)- Issued by abraham lincoln on january 1st, it declared that all slaves in the confederate states would be free . Freed 4 million slaves significance of the emancipation proclamation is that it led to freeing all the slaves in the United States.
Fifteenth Amendment (1869) - to the Constitution granted African American men the right to vote by declaring that the "right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” The significance of this is because it is the very first time that african american men get a say in the government and its sort of a symbolism of including them into the country for the first time ever.
