ch1 astronomy.docx - If the Sun’s gravity suddenly...

This preview shows page 1 out of 1 page.

If the Sun’s gravity suddenly disappeared, the Earth would likely fly away in a straight line. The sun has enough gravity to keep the Earth orbiting around it. Without this gravity, the Earth would move in the direction that it has momentum already in (without the Sun’s gravity.) The moon is controlled by both the Sun and Earth’s gravity, but the Sun pulls harder on the moon than the Earth does. The Earth moves fast enough to “catch” the moon in the case that the Sun’s gravity suddenly disappeared. The moon would then move closer to Earth. Rocky asteroids are found in the asteroid belt, the Kuiper belt, and in the oort cloud. The asteroid belt is located between Mars and Jupiter. The Kuiper belt contains icy rocks and comets. The oort cloud is located throughout the solar system, beyond the planets we know. The cloud contains comets. Icy rocks can be found in the Kuiper belt, beyond the orbit of Neptune. The oort cloud also contains a “shell” of trillions of icy bodies.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
