1. Fast runner
When I was growing up my father told me that our last name, Foos, was German for foot
because our ancestors had been very fast runners. I am curious whether there is any evidence
for this claim in my family so I have gathered running times for a distance of one mile from 6
family members. The average healthy adult can run one mile in 10 minutes and 13 seconds
(standard deviation of 76 seconds). Is my family running speed different from the national
average?
2. Land value tax
In a survey, 45% of the respondents stated that they pay land value tax (PBB) on time. A revenue
officer believed this result to be too high, so she randomly selected 150 building owners and
discovered that 63 of them pay the land value tax on time. Does the revenue officer have a right
to be sceptical? Use the 0.1 level of significance.
3. Taxi company
PT. Green Falcon Bandung is a local taxi company located in Bandung. Mr. Husen, the operation
manager, is urged to decide whether using radial tires will consume less fuel than using belt
tires. He conducted experiment using 15 cars with belted tires and 12 cars with radial tires. The
experiment confirmed that the cars with radial tires showed the average fuel consumption of 8.5
kilometers per liter and a standard deviation of 1.2 kilometers per liter. Meanwhile, the belted
tires experiment demonstrated a result of 7.5 kilometers per liter for its average gasoline
consumption with a standard deviation of 1.5 kilometers per liter.
