Psych Notes April 9, 2007 Social Attitudes Behavior attitude consistency Chinese couple studies Important factors Attitude Change Dissonance Basic idea Effort justification Persuasion Sender, message, receiver Routes Central Peripheral An attitude locates an object of thought on dimensions of judgment Taking some object that you think about and putting it on a range of judgment. Good/bad Like/dislike Approve/disapprove 3 components of attitudes - cognitive, affective and behavioral components - cognitive o the evaluation or judgment that you make - affective o the emotions that are aroused by the attitude - behavioral o how people actually behave in the presence of that attitude The assumption is that people who express very strong attitudes are more likely to act in the presence of the attitude. The Chinese couple study - very high level of prejudice against Asian people, it was also socially acceptable to express these prejudices - La Pierre sent out a questionnaire and asked establishment owners if they would provide service to Asian people? o
