Psych Notes March 7, 2007 Avoidance – the dog will jump over the wall to escape the shock. The pain goes away when he jumps over the wall. Negative reinforcement – something is being removed. Escape – you experience something bad and you run away Avoidance – you don’t experience something bad because you act before the bad thing can occur The pain makes the dog anxious. The anxiety is an adversive stimulus. A negative emotional state, it jumps over the wall to avoid the pain and escape the anxiety. the dog learns that it is safe on the other side of the wall. A phobic response cannot stand being near or even hearing about the object or idea. An extreme, extreme fear The phobic response can be learned through classical conditioning. The fear can then generalize to all related things. The fear can then be escaped through negative reinforcement. When you approach a bridge, you drive away When you see a snake, you run away. Then you avoid the fear all together.
