Psych Notes 2/26/07 EXAM WILL BE EITHER A WEEK FROM WEDNESDAY OR TWO WEEKS FROM TODAY PAPER IS DUE NEXT MONDAY Sensation vs. perception Not very far beyond the retina…we have color processing Information processing begins at the retina Cross cells behind the retina – lateral antagonism How knowledge that we have effects our perceptions Gastulsh psychologists were interested in perceptions “the whole is greater than the sum of the parts” Movies – moving pictures – motion pictures Apparent motion – The Phi phenomenon - We perceive motion where none exists. A movie is really made up of thousands of still pictures shown rapidly one after another In order to see an object you have to see it against some background. That’s why camouflage. The colors blend in with the background and they become hidden. What we have just seen establishes an expectation for what we will see next. Our expectations about what we will see can significantly effect our perceptions.
