This preview shows page 1 out of 3 pages.

Topic 3: Cell membrane structure & function learning outcomes 1. Components of cell membrane? a. Phospholipids, glycolipids, glycoproteins, proteins, cholesterol 2. Factors that increase/decrease membrane fluidity a. Temperature b. Saturated/unsaturated c. Length of fatty acid chains d. Cholesterol 3. What increases membrane fluidity? a. Temp increase. Unsaturated (cuz it has kinks & bends). Shorter fatty acid chains. 4. What decreases membrane fluidity? a. Temp decrease. Saturated (compact). Longer fatty acid chains. 5. Movement of membranes? a. Drift laterally mainly. Rarely flip flop transversely 6. Cholesterol effect on membrane fluidity? a. Cholesterol is buffer= prevent tight packing (increase temp). restrains movement of phospholipids (decrease temp) 7. 3 proteins on membrane? a. Peripheral b. Integral c. Transmembrane 8. Peripheral proteins a. On surface of membrane 9. Integral proteins a. Penetrate hydrophobic core. 10. Transmembrane proteins a. Penetrate hydrophobic core & span the whole membrane (go from one side to the other) 11. 6 major fucntions of proteins?

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
