Focka 1 Liz Audrey Focka Professor Peacy CHEM 1211-004 September 13 , 2018 Experiment #3 Purpose; To observe a demonstration of oxidation of a metal, of sublimation and deposition and to observe the appearance of several elements Equally to determine the boiling point of methyl alcohol and an unknown liquid, whether a solid and a liquid are soluble or insoluble in water and to determine whether a substance is undergoing a physical or chemical change and finally to gain proficiency in determining a boiling point. Procedure; Heating a copper wire; - Hold a copper wire with crucible tongs and heat until the wire is red hot and allow it to cool. Classify if it is a physical change. Heating Iodine Crystals; - Put 3 small crystals of iodine in a dry 250-mL beaker. Cover the beaker using evaporating dish containing ice. Support the beaker on a ring stand and gently heat the crystals until all iodine vaporizes. Using crucible tongs to hold the evaporating=g dish and classify whether it is a physical or chemical change.
