A man who is known as “the hunger artist”, fasts for a living travels from town to town. In each town, the hunger artist chooses a public location and puts himself on display in a locked, straw-lined cage, where he fasts for periods of up to forty days. A real-life hunger Artist known as Dr. Tanners goes on a similar adventure for the purist of medical studies. Dr. Tanners believed he was sharing with the world the health benefits of fasting. Both the hunger artist and Dr. Tanner shared their experiences of a 40 day fast with surrounding members of society, both becoming increasingly popular. Tanners work was considered a scientifically breakthrough while the hunger Artist was seen as a strange side act in a circus. Dr. Tanner was motivated by the Bible's account of Jesus' forty day fast in the desert. He believed that he had found a deeper meaning to Jesus' fast and that there are underlying health benefits to fasting. Tanner believed that people ate far too much and that the solution to stomach
