Biology Class Notes Lesson 18 How Humans Effect the Environment Objective: 2.1.1, 2.2.1, 2.2.2 Lesson 19 Conservation Objective: 2.2.2 Keystone Species ● Play a critical role in the community structure of an ecosystem. ● Can be the first or last species to be damaged by environmental impacts such as pollution, pesticides, or overharvesting. ● Can be microscopic or large, plant, animal, fungi, etc. ● Deserve extra protection because of the effects of their loss. Indicator Species ● The “canary in the coal mine” ● Vary from region to region ● Are sensitive to changes in the environment and provide warnings. ● Ex: Frogs and salamanders: Their eggs are transparent and the offspring suffer from elevated mutation rates when UV exposer is too great. Bioaccumulation: The retention and increase in concentration of harmful substances in the tissues of an organism. Ex: Mercury and DDT Eutrophication ● Occurs when excess nutrients are released into a body of water.
