Rhetorical Devices Notes Rhetoric The art or study of effective argument. Rhetorical Devices Devices that speakers use to engage listeners. Speakers use propaganda techniques like bandwagon and name calling to persuade their audience. You must listen to a speech carefully in order to catch these methods of persuasion. Examples of Rhetorical Devices Note: There are many more devices than I have listed. Alliteration - “Your c ountry and your countryman c ounts on you!” Metaphor - “Our enemy is an open wound . If we don’t tend to it now, the infection will spread!” Simile - “Our enemy is like a roaring lion waiting to get out of its cage. If we let it out, we’re the only ones at fault!” Repetition - “We shall not fall or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, [... many more ...] We shall never surrender.” Hyperbole - extreme exaggeration. Example: If he cuts me off one more time, I’ll snap. Appeal to Fear – “Yesterday, a mortgage payment. Today a windstorm. Tomorrow, you may be fighting for your dreams or fighting for your life .” Parallelism - “Reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man, and writing an exact man” (Francis Bacon, “Of Studies”). ... (100 of 243 words) o In its simplest form parallelism consists of single sentences/structures that have a slight variation in meaning: “ordain and establish” or “overtake and surpass.” George Bush Example:
